Common Consumption

On November 20, 2023, Augusta City Council approved Ordinance No. 2230 establishing the Red Brick Social District Common Consumption Area (CCA) and authorizing the possession and consumption of alcoholic liquor or cereal malt beverage within its boundaries between 11:00 AM and 10:00 PM only on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. 

Specifically, the Ordinance allows persons over the age of 21 to openly carry and consume alcoholic beverages (that are purchased from a registered business and served in a specific establishment-provided cup) in Downtown Augusta in the Designated Main Street area (encompassed by the following boundaries: on the north by the old railroad right of way; on the south by Second Avenue; on the west by the north-south alley between State Street and School Street; and on the east by the north-south alley between State Street and School Street shown bordered in red on the map below:

Rules and Regulations

  • Beverage must be contained in an approved cup provided by a permitted district serving business.  NO BYOB. NO REFILLS.
  • No establishment shall allow any person to leave their premises with more than one alcoholic beverage at a time.
  • All beverages must stay within the CCA as noted by sidewalk signage.
  • Alcoholic beverages purchased outside the boundaries of the CCA are not permitted inside the CCA.
  • Alcoholic beverages purchased from a serving business can be brought into a supporting business that displays a round Supporting Business sticker.  Do NOT enter a business with a beverage unless a sticker is displayed.
  • Alcoholic beverages may be consumed on public property within the CCA including sidewalks and crosswalks. 
  • Alcoholic beverages may NOT be consumed in businesses that prohibit alcoholic liquor or cereal malt beverages, parking lots, street parking spaces or city streets unless the street has been closed to vehicular traffic for a special event approved by the City Council.
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is at the discretion of the establishment.  An establishment has the right to refuse use of Common Consumption Cups at any time.
  • All persons within the CCA shall follow all laws and ordinances concerning the purchase, sale, and consumption of alcohol or cereal malt beverage.
  • Any person acting in a way that violates any provision of the Municipal Code, State or Federal laws, including but not limited to offenses against person, property, the public peace, the public safety, or public morals, will be removed from the CCA.
