Street Classifications
The City of Augusta defines their street classification with four designations; local, collectors, arterials and expressways. The hierarchy of road types classified by function in acceding order is: local roadways, collector roadways, arterial roadways and expressways.
- Local Roadways - provide direct access to private property with ideal traffic volume of less than 1,500 vehicles per day.
- Collector Roadways - collect traffic in residential neighborhoods and may range between 1,500 and 5,000 vehicles per day.
- Arterial Roadways - either carry traffic through residential areas without directly accessing any of the properties, or serve major activity centers 12,000 and 35,000 vehicles per day.
- Expressways - are primary arterial roadways that are fully or partially access controlled.
